Marathi TV captures Football Fever
Fifa 2010, Football Wordcup

World Cup Football matches are telecast late at night and hence many viewers are deprived of this popular sport. But, our news channels are kind enough to show some exciting moments in the news section and our Marathi news channels are nowhere behind. Almost all the Marathi TV channels have shared the clippings of important matches during the news telecast on sports. It was for the first time that the Asia Cup cricket had to take a back seat, in the presence of Football coverage.

Some of the exciting moments especially the penalty shoot outs during the match between Paraguay and Japan could be witnessed on Marathi news channels. Japan, which was the only Asian team in last 16, lost this match 0-1 and failed to enter the quarter final stage. The news channels also showed clippings of the most exciting match between Portugal and Spain. There was a big disappointment, as it turned out to be the last match for popular player Ronaldo, as Portugal lost this match with a narrow margin. The news channels also carried the reports about the fans and supporters of Portugal getting disturbed and some of them even blaming Ronaldo for the defeat.

On the other news front, while all the channels focused on the Amarnath Yatra, they also cautioned the pilgrims about extra care, in view of the existing law and order problem in Kashmir valley. The news about opposition coming from people all over India against rise in cooking gas prices was highlighted by all channels. But, the most useful news was about the difference shown in wholesale and retail vegetable prices; clearly giving hint to the people that the retailers were making a big money under the cover of price rise. For the past several days, we haven’t seen any major Breaking News from any of the channels based on their own investigative report. It looks like that now days they are depending more on Citizen Journalists, while exposing the system.

Looking at the progress of the ongoing TV serials, Star Pravah’s ‘Olakh’ seems to have picked up well in its screenplay, with some content to show the struggle faced by two young girls; after their arrival in Mumbai in search of their ultimate goal. However, ‘Kashyala Udyachi Baat’ on the same channel is still struggling to sort out the Venus issue. The position about the movement in screenplay does not look satisfactory in other serials. The formula of time pass and outdated gimmicks played by the bad character are commonly observed. There is one more addition in the form of ‘Lek Ladki Ya Gharchi’ on E-TV this week.
