India-Pak Cricket Match conquered TV News.
We are all aware that Cricket is the religion of India. But, never before we had witnessed such a hype in news on television for the India - Pakistan semi final match in the World cup cricket that was played on Wednesday. For almost three days before this event, the Marathi news channels not only discussed about possibility of the winner but also debated on the issue over invitation issued by the Indian Prime Minister to his Pakistani counterpart to come and witness the semi final match between two traditional rivals in cricket. There were for and against views on linking politics with cricket and majority of the viewers felt that the Government was unnecessarily trying to make use of diplomacy through the medium of cricket.

Earlier, the ICC had prevented private TV channels entry for the semi final match, but on the day of the match this restriction was removed enabling the TV channels to cover the news on the match live from Mohali. As a result of this, the news channels could catch the glimpse of India's victory over Pakistan in different ways. Some of them captured the celebrations at the stadium while others captured the scenes at the lobby outside the dressing rooms of the players. Some of the channels even covered the celebrations in Mumbai, as the enthusiasts of cricket welcomed India's entry into finals to be played in Mumbai on 2nd April.

Different methods were adopted by the cricket lovers to motivate the Indian cricketers, be it offering prayers at all religious places or hosting musical programmes. One such musical propgramme hosted to wish the Indian cricket team at Vile Parle presented by singer Rahul Vaidya, was telecast by Zee 24 Taas. Reacting on Indian Cricket team's victory over Pakistan, IBN Lokmat Chief Anchor and news editor did appreciate the efforts of Indian team but also expressed his concern over people staying away from work to celebrate such occasions. "Now, if India wins World Cup, you will find the next seven days, people spending their time on celebrations," he said.

While Zee 24 Taas in association with Geo TV Pakistan tried to show how the small daughters of Pakistan Captain Shahid Afridi reacted to Pakistan's defeat, the Star Majha channel invited popular singer Asha Bhosale to exchange her pleasantries on cricket. The veteran singer, who is passionate about this game, recalled all her memorable moments watching all those great matches from the days of Polly Umrigar to Sachin Tendulkar. "I was always there to cheer for Indian team and on 2nd April I will be there at Wankhede Stadium," she said. Besides Asha Bhosale, many other celebrities from Marathi entertainment also congratulated the Indian team and wished them luck for the finals.

The news on cricket overshadowed the news about the verdict passed by Mumbai Sessions court, which convicted actor Shiny Ahuja despite the victim working as a domestic help at the time of the incident, turning hostile during the trial. The actor was mainly implicated in the rape case on his domestic help and that was officially proved with the help of DNA reports. The news also reported that the maid who turned hostile later, would be tried under perjury separately. The actor has been sentenced to 7 years of RI for raping the maid.

On the entertainment front, most of the Marathi TV serials proved that they were running short of good entertaining content, as they focused more on repeated torture suffered by the good people at the hands of evil characters. In short, the screenplay of such serials only glorified the bad characters for no reason. It was a real test of patience for those who have become addicted to watching such stupid acts. Now days, it is too much of violence witnessed in Marathi serials. No wonder, the domestic crimes are on the rise in the state.
