Only few months ago Mumbai University Vice chancellor Dr. Rajan Veluklar was in
controversy . Now, he is once again surrounded by controversy, over the question
paper leak of 'Basic Electronics & Engineering' exams. The Marathi news channels
highlighted this news, with arrest of concerned people supposed to be temporary
staff in Examination department, by Crime Branch, Mumbai and questioning the
concerned Professor and Lecturer connected with paper setting. The news also
reported that the crime was detected by the Cyber Branch of Police, while
tracing the real culprits.
When IBN Lokmat Channel spoke to former Vice chancellor Arun Sawant, he was
critical about the procedure followed in setting the examination paper and
secrecy supposed to be maintained by the concerned people. "There are three
sets of question papers to be prepared and only a night before the exams, the
decision is taken, which particular set is to be used for exams. In spite of
that, how a particular set of Question paper was leaked?" he questioned. He was
indirectly hinting at the negligence on the part of the present Vice chancellor.
Mr. Sawant said that during his tenure, no such event occurred; because he
himself monitored the system. "Now, when it is detected that there were
temporary staff involved in leakage; it is not known, how such people were
posted in such an important department of exam section? It is not the practice
to post such temporary staff in such departments, where secrecy is to be
maintained," he pointed out. In the present case, the question papers were
shared by many students via facebook, a social networking site; to recover the
amount spent by each one of them to acquire the paper.
Another controversial news that hit the Marathi small screen news was about the
huge expenditure amounting to Rs. 35 lakhs, involved in renovating the two
toilets in the Planning Commission office in New Delhi. The news was the effect
of the information acquired under RTI act by a social activist. Importance of
this news was that the same office of the Government, which decides the Poverty
line of the people living in India by fixing the minimum amount i.e. Rs.28/- per
day for living; were spending lavishly over renovation for toilets meant for 60
officers. Though Mr. Montek Singh was reported to have said that the Toilets
were not for personal use and were for public use; it is not understood why
costly fixtures were fitted on a five star hotel style, in a Government office;
when there were no sufficient public toilets at many places in India ?
In a debate held on this issue on a TV channel, a Congress spokesperson said
that the amount spent was not big, to make an issue out of it. To which, the BJP
spokesperson said that it was obvious for the ruling party spokesman to say so;
because the ruling party ministers were involved in scams which were as high as
10,000 crores onwards. This is true, as expenses in lakhs, are not taken
seriously by any politician. Today, we find scams involving thousand crores of
rupees. Those involved in such acts are really bringing shame to this country,
considered to be a progressive nation. Let's see how Baba Ramdev, who is now a
days seen meeting many political leaders from different parties, suggesting ways
to stop corruption; reacts to this issue.
