Ashok Saraf

Biography / Profile:

At 69, he is fit enough to work with the same enthusiasm, as he did in 70s, when he made his debut in Marathi films. He has a terrific sense of timing, when he performs comedy scenes with his co stars. No wonder, his pairing with late Laxmikant Berde turned out to be a hit. He must have done maximum Marathi films with Laxmikant Berde in 80s. But, no one can forget his cunning havaldar in Dada Kondke’s 1975 film ‘Pandu hawaldar’ and a ‘Munimji’ in Rakesh Roshan’s film ‘Karan Arjun’ in 1995. During the past 40 years, he has played a variety of roles in Marathi and Hindi films .But, he was more known for his comedy..

Interviews

ASHOK SARAF

Did you think of producing a comedy movie while entering the production line?
I have done a lot of comedy movies since the beginning. The audience expected comedy from me since I was always a comedy actor. I made a comedy movie to offer the audience what they wanted.
What were your expectations form the Ek Dav Dhobi Pachad?
In today’s stressful life, a movie should be an entertaining one. When the audience should come out of the theatre they should come out smiling instead of thinking about what they witnessed. I think this is what the audience expect. I knew that I would get a lot of response from the audience and that Ek Dav Dhobi Pachad would be a hit. I give all the credit to my team. Even Nivedita helped a lot. She took lot of efforts while making this movie.
Did you have any special plans for distribution?
No movie becomes popular only through marketing and promotion. Word of mouth publicity also plays an important role. I am thankful to Zee Talkies for taking my movie to every household.

Whose name was on your mind for the direction part?
I was not thinking of anyone in particular. I am happy with my director. Though he is not so popular, he is smart. He knows what cinema actually means. He knows how to put things in place and how a particular scene will look on the screen. And of course, I was always there. I told him how to do things. My own experience helped a lot.

On what basis do you say a movie is a big hit?
Actually, Marathi Cinema is passing through a good phase. You need to do a good job and not just shoot anything. The picturisation should match your story. Also, only good picturisation does not help. But the actors, script, story and direction should also be of a good quality. In short, if you come up with a good story, the people will always like it.

Besides movies, you have also acted in plays; can you tell us something about this field?
Like I told before, since I am known as a comedy actor, people expect comedy from me. Some years back my play, ‘Anadhikrut’ was being staged. Its story was extremely good. The subject was a bit serious and the play did not do that well. Now, the play which is being staged is a comedy one. I am getting a lot of response from the audience and my role in the play is a comedy one.
Which movie are you planning after Ek Dav Dhobi Pachad?
Yes, I am planning to come up with another movie. The work has initiated. Right now, the story is being worked on. The move will be as good as Dhobi Pachad.

Which is your dream role?
I have always accepted those roles which I have liked. I have a lot of dream roles. It is important for me to live with every role.
