Story: Kisanrao Kurade-Patil

The girl child is always considered as unwanted and is a burden to the family. The birth of a girl is not taken with the same enthusiasm as that of a boy. The fact that a new member would now be coming into the family is not looked forward to by families in the society.

The Indian society had always considered a woman of a lower standard. She was to be looked down upon by the society. She was always troubled, tortured and dominated. She was blamed for all the wrong things that would take place in the family.

Even after years of efforts by social reformers and now by the NGOs, the government and social workers, this mentality has still not left the minds of Indian people and the society. The incidence of female foetus has not reduced. Focusing of this serious issue is director Raaj Israni through his sweet-sounding movie Chingi.

Produced under the banner of Isarani Productions, Chingi is about the life of a newly married couple Arti and Rohan Date. Arti played by Girija Oak is pressurized by her in-laws to give birth to a boy. Since, Aarti’s mother could never produce a boy; she fears that she too will not be able to fulfill the expectations of her in-laws. Arti struggles to overcome this physical and mental torture every moment of her life. When one of her sister Priyanka’s marriage breaks because of the history of not having a boy in the family, Arti is under total mental disturbance. At such time, she realizes she is pregnant. Unable to overcome her fear of the baby being a girl, Arti takes a major decision without consulting her husband, this is where the story of Chingi begins.

Through Chingi, Israni not only questions the society about the state of women and the girl child but also provides solutions for it. He has not just focused on the issue of foeticide but has proved why girls are needed for the society; what they can do for a person, a family and for the human race.

The other actors in the movie are Milind Gavli, Ravindra Berde, Ela Bhate, Ujjwal Jog, Harshali Zeene, Arun Basavade, Milan Shirke, Shweta Shinde, Sneha Wagh, Charushila Wachani, Nagesh Bhosale, Shubhangi Latkar, Dr Vilas Ujawane, Kanchan Pagare, Sandeep Bhansali gives a guest appearance.
