"I love to play roles which can prove my ability" - Dhanashri Kadgaonkar
Two years ago, a group of youngsters displayed their brilliant acting skills in Zee Marathi’s reality show ‘Maharashtracha Superstar’. Among those short listed 10 participants for the finals, was a young collegian Dhanashree Kadgaonkar from Pune. She was then doing her master’s degree from IMCC; but, seeing her talents, her mother had insisted that she took part in this reality show. Dhanashree did find her place among the 24 participants selected for this competition, after going through a series of auditions.
As we all know that talent never goes unnoticed, whether you are an ultimate winner or not. So, Dhanashree was offered a role of a sister in Balaji’s popular serial ‘Majhiya Priyala Preet kalena’ and she played her part sincerely. After watching her performance, Dhanashri received several offers, but then she had decided to be choosy about the roles. An opportunity came very recently, when she was called for audition for the new serial ‘Janmagath’ produced by Bharat Gaekwad, who had just launched his new production company
Sumukhesh along with his friend Abhijit Gadgil. Dhanashri perfectly met the requirements of the lead girl Rucha, and she got selected for this role, after her audition.
With hardly a week after the telecast of this serial on Saam TV at prime time, Dhanashri has managed to find her place in the hearts of many people, who regularly watch TV serials. It’s a strong subject, based on a social issue and Dhanashri has already made her presence felt, with few important scenes that too in presence of renowned artists, giving a clear indication that she is there to stay in this profession for a long time. Marathi Movie World spoke to this young talented actress, who has a solid theatre background. Excerpts from an interview:

Q: Tell us something about your selection and performance in the Maharashtracha Superstar show?
A: I should thank my mother for that. It was because of her, I gave my auditions. She was the first one, who had spotted the talent in me. When I got into the team, it was more of learning process; as we all had to attempt something different every time, on a given script, forming our teams. Sometimes, there was no script and we on our own had to improvise to present a skit. It was more of a team work.
Q: Why did you opt for a sister’s role on your debut in TV serial ?
A: Frankly speaking, though I had a theatre background in Pune, I
never expected that I would get

an offer from a
serial, so early . At that time, instead of expecting a lead actress role, I
was more particular about the importance of the role in the serial. Since it
was a big banner and had to work with my colleagues from Maharashtracha Superstar show, I immediately accepted that offer.
Q: But then, how you received this offer of Rucha in the serial ‘Janmagath’ ?
A: After doing ‘Majhiya Priyala Preet kalena’, I was very particular about the type of roles and became selective. When I was called for the audition of ‘Janmagath’, I was asked to come with light make up and simple Punjabi dress. But, that day I was wearing a kurta. First, I was asked to give audition for hero’s sister and then they also tried me for Rucha’s role. The assistant director- Sachin then asked me whether I could drive a scooter and I immediately said ‘Yes’. For a girl living in Pune, riding scooter was very common. Perhaps, this scooter driving came to my advantage to get this role.
Q: How powerful is this role ?
A: The character of Rucha I play, is having lot of strength. When I was told that I was playing the daughter of Kirawat family; the first question I asked was to explain me the details about profession. After learning the details, I paid more attention on the attitude of Rucha and her possessiveness towards her family, besides being a good friend to the hero of the film. Now, with just a week after the start of this serial, people have started recognizing me and that speaks about the strength of this role.
Q: You also have a strong theatre background. Tell us something about it .
A: Since my college days, I have been taking part in drama competitions. I have represented Garvare College and IMCC during my post graduation in Management for the Purshottam Shield. There was a good atmosphere in the family to encourage me, as my father was associated with classical music plays. Presently, my brother Saurabh is also associated with a play ‘Katyar Kaljaat Ghusli’. With this theatre background, I also performed in two commercial plays, namely : Sunil Barve’s ‘Jhopi Gelela Jagaa Jhala’ and Chandrakant Kulkarni’s ‘Aadhi Basu Mag Bolu’. It was a good experience to polish my acting skills. Personally , I feel that exposure to all the three mediums, gives an actor that required confidence, to test his or her skills.
Q: So now, you are ready for the films?
A: That is for others to decide. ( Smiles) .
