Chandrakant Raghunath Gokhale was born on January 7, 1921 in Miraj. He was born into a family of actors. His father died early. It can be said that young Chandrakant took his first lessons into acting from his grandmother Durgabai and mother Kamalabai. His family drama group was called ‘Chittakarsha’. Kmalabai would take care of her family by acting in various plays. Chandrakant could not take education because of extreme poverty.

He entered the world of theater as a child artist. ‘Punha Hindu’ was the first play he acted in. He later learned to read and write because of his mother. He played the roles of a woman in plays like ‘ Babandshahi’ and ‘ Padmini’

He got the opportunity to learn ‘Bandhishi’ a form of singing and music from the Dinanath , the last hire of ‘ Balwant Sangeet’, a theater group. He played various roles in many musical plays and got the opportunity to act in movies.

He has kept an amount of Rs. 51 thousand to be donated every year to soldiers who had sacrifices their lives for the country, who were fighting on the LOC and who had became disabled in the war. He has also made a provision for donating a sum of Rs. 51 thousand for defense. Apart from this , he would constantly donated money to old age homes, re-habilitation homes of sex- workers and blind homes.

Among the awards he received, few were Vishnudas Bhave Gaurav Puraskar, V. Shantaram Award, Natya Parishad’s Jivan Gaurav Puraskar, the President award for Dhakti Jaau and Manini, 8 State awards for his numerous roles in movies and plays, Chintamani Kolhatkar award, Natyashreshta Nanasaheb Phatak award, Honorable Dinanath Smruti Pratisthan award, Chatrapati Shahu Puraskar, Swatantraveer Sawarkar Puraskar, Balgandharva Puraskar and many more.

The veteran actor has acted in over 100 Marathi and Hindi films in his career spanning over seven decades. Chandrakant Gokhale’s acting in two Marathi films ‘Dhakti Jau’ and ‘Manini’ even won him the President’s award. The actor was also the proud recipient of eight state awards.

His autobiography is famous in the book called ‘ Chandrakiran’. He has acted in many plays like Ek hota Mahatara, Barrister, Purush, Parayaya, Natsamrath, Raje Mastar, Bhav Bandh, Punyaprabhav, zunzharrao and others. He has also acted in Marathi movies like Jivacha Sakha, Suvasini, Manini, Swapna Teech Lochani, Dhakti Jaau, Dharma Kanya, Maharani Yesubai, Majha Ghar Majhi Manase and others whiole in Hindi movies like Irshah, Panna, Vishvas Ghat and Hirasat. Apart from this he ahs also acted in many movies made by the students of FTII.
